Pearls in the Spotlight: Pearl Engagement Rings

Pearls for engagement rings are trending. The idea may have started with Emma Stone’s sweet white akoya pearl, diamond, and gold style, but myriad other starlets have picked up the trend and are running with it. Think Michelle Williams, whose white pearl ring cemented her engagement to director Thomas Kail, and Ariana Grande’s engagement ring featuring an oval-shape diamond cozying up to an heirloom white pearl from her grandparents. Wearers will need to be more careful with daily wear—pearl is just a 2.5 on the Mohs hardness scale, meaning it scratches more easily than other more durable stones—but the tenderhearted state of mind of the bearer could extend to her dearest accessory.

Men in pearls? Yes, it’s a thing. From Harry Styles to the Jonas Brothers to Marc Jacobs and more. Men in pearls is a trend that started at the 2019 Met Gala and continued on during Spring/Summer 2020 Paris Fashion Week with A$AP Rocky, and at the 2020 MTV Video Music Awards with Machine Gun Kelly. As for the aforementioned fashion designer, he bought his own strand last year; he dished to Town & Country editor in chief Stellene Volandes via Zoom in fall 2020 about the match made at Mikimoto. “From the day I received them, I haven’t taken them off,” he said.

From bracelets and rings to oversize baroque-like pearl bags, accents on T-shirts, and ropes of pearls wrapped around models' necks, the pearl remains a fixture in many runway shows. And let’s not forget the headdresses and breast outliners! Why? “I think that’s the escapism we’re all craving,” Simone Rocha recently told Vogue.
